Essential Items to Bring

A recommendation on essential things to carry and have with you at all times, for convenience and in case of an emergency. You'll be thankful you did.

If you're a tropical cat like me, you'll want to bring some thick, warm clothing, including gloves and hat. The temperature is bitter cold, and the winds can reach up to 120 km/hr.

Bring along a change of clothes. You wouldn't want to be stuck in a cold wet t-shirt after all the sweating.

A light rain coat would come in handy when it rains.

A good, comfortable pair of shoes - I can't stress enough of how important this is. You'll be trekking for up to 10 hours a day - getting blisters on your feet is the last thing you would want. If you have new shoes, break into it first by going for some runs / hikes beforehand.

Wear your socks inside out - so that the lining doesn't rub against your toes and cause blisters.

Get a headlamp if possible, for the pre-dawn climb in pitch darkness. Torchlights are okay but they're a hassle to carry, especially when you need to hold on to the ropes during tricky areas of the climb. Bring along extra batteries because the hike in the dark is about 4 hours.

A whistle, only to be used when help is needed. Three short blasts to attract attention. Long continuous blasts for emergency and serious injuries.

Some energy food and water (eg. chocolate bars, glucose, tablets, biscuits, etc)

Also, stock up on tissue papers and a few plastic bags. In the cold, my nose was dripping like a leaking tap. Tissue papers would come in handy, and dump all used tissue / food wrappers / trash into your plastic bags.

Headache tablets, plasters for blister and heat rub are all useful.

Lastly - extra battery & memory cards for your camera. You'll be cursing yourself if either one runs out before you finish the climb.
