Climbing Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in South East Asia, standing at an impressive 4,095.2 m (13,435 ft). Climbs are usually done in 2-3 days starting from Kinabalu Park, which is a couple of hours' drive from Kota Kinabalu.

There are two trails that can be taken - the most common being the Timpohon trail. The other less travelled path, Mesilau is tougher but offers nicer sceneries.

Despite its size, Mt Kinabalu is one of the easiest and friendliest mountain in the world to climb. Thousands of climbers scale the mountain each year. No special skills or equipment are needed - just tons of stamina, patience and determination.

However, having a fat wallet probably helps, because you can hire porters to carry your bags. If need be - you may even hire a group of porters to lug your sorry ass up the mountain, but that beats the whole point :-)

Physical Conditioning

You need not become Mr Fitness to climb Mt Kinabalu. Heck - the most exercise that I did prior to the climb was walking for some 300m to the airport terminal!

I still managed to finish the climb - but paid a dear price for it. These basic fitness hints should help you finish the journey with plenty of juice left...

Equipment

A recommendation on essential things to carry and have with you at all times, for convenience and in case of an emergency. You'll be thankful you did.

Safety Instructions

Important notes for potential climbers. Take a few minutes and read thru, or share it with friends who will be climbing. It may save your life. Hmm-kay?
