really enjoyed looking through your travel journal. The reason i was particularly interested is because I am interested in traveling to Asia on Sept. 2, 2010 for about 9 days. My three areas of interest are Sabah, Bali, or Koh Samui but i am not sure which place to visit especially with weather conditions and prices during the the first weeks of september. If you can share any light on visits to sabah for a budget traveler. Accomodations?

Hi,
I'm planning to go up Mt Kinabalu, mid Dec 08. Its kinda impromptu actually and I haven't made any reservations yet, but this would be the best time for me to do it. Is it difficult to find accommodation at Laban Rata or at any of the rest areas? Do I need to book in advance for anything? Also would the monsoon season and the rains be a problem in the climb?
Thanks for your help :)
cheers,
Jai

Hi, can you tell me when you climbed Mt Kinabalu? Perhaps you can mention when you went on this trip in your Introduction.
It would help give an idea of how things look at that time of year and also allow others who've gone during different months to compare their own photos.
Thanks!

Hi Mike,
Beautiful images!
I need to come back to view the rest there are so many. Is it ok to use no10 image of the mountain?
Here is a story, true or flase its a lovely story about a lady waiting for her man at Kinabalu. You can read it here:
quote>The second source states that the name “Kinabalu” actually means “Cina Balu” ( which would fully mean “A Chinese Widow”).
The link to the story:

Thanks for putting your images on-line, with or without permission to the photograph I will add you to the sidebar in my Wordpress with pleassure.
Thanks also for the English text.

Hi, could you tell me if it's possible to leave some of our things behind at KK HQ before leaving for Timpohon Gate, say like some sorta lockers that we can store our belongings overnight, so that we don't have to carry to whole load up (right?)?
The reason I'm asking this is because we're doing a week trip in KK and 2 of which will be spend on climbing. So, (1st day of climb to Laban Rata) we're getting to KK HQ on our own, with our bagpacks and all and of course we only want to bring the essentials for the climb.
By the way, great pics man! I can't wait for my own...

Wonderful pictures! Exactly what I was looking for to show my 14 year old son and 12 year daugther how beautiful mount kinabalu is. They were born in the city of Toronto , had no idea about any mountain climbing or life outside of the city. I thought this will be the best time since this is their second trip (first time when they were 2-4 years old) .
I guess we better hit the threadmill esp. me and hubby - old and breaking apart. Heading to Sabah in Dec for 10 days trip. Thank you for the pictures.

Hey,
I've got a few questions to ask you about my planning for the trip to Mt Kinabalu and its surroundings.
1. We are planning to go Poring hot spring straight after we finished climbing the Mountain. And we are going to Manukan Island the next morning. My question is what is the frequency of the ferry from KK to Manukan Island? Do they operate throughout the day or only within specified time?
2. I read from your entry, you went from Manukan Island to Padas River witin the same day. That is our plan also. How do you manage to get the train at Beaufort? What time is the first ferry from Manukan Island to KK. Because i understand the bus train from Beaufort to Pangi leaves at 9am.
So do you advise us to go from Manukan Island to Pedas river in the same day? Thanks

My wife is a sabahun and I have travelled with her several times to visit family. We were married in KK in July 2000. Been to the national park several times but never planned an ascent. Planning to climb in novemebr this year. Your advice is much appreciated and great pictures.
I take it you went up in 2002 if the board had the 2001 runners times, yes?

Hey,
My last attempt on scaling MT K was about 10 years ago. Mesilau wasnt opened yet. I was awesome but rain prevented us from reaching the summit. So rain cost is a must. Get a disposable type if necessary. Pay the porter to carry your stuff. But do remember to keep the essentials with you. Once the porter left, you will likely to see him only when you reached PL/GL. They can walk fast and need no rest.
For those of you intend to climb the mountain, my advice is pre-book yourself. Try avoiding Malaysian school breaks or public holidays too. If you intend to visit Poring Hotspring then try having lunch at the Sabah Tea Plantation. Food isnt that good but never seen so much green in my life and the smell of fresh tea leaves..... It is about 6km from Poring junction on the way to Sandakan (where the Sepilok Orang Utan Sactuary is). Sabah tea will not make the nicest cup of tea (dull colour) but taste among the best. Try it yourself.
Someone mentioned about the Tenom Agriculture Park, I have been there too. It is huge and amazing. Good for those who like to study about plants. It is a little out of the way though as there are not much of attraction nearby. If you happened to be there, do not forget to check out the "magic fruit". It is only the size of a coffee bean but can turn anything to taste sweet. Even a lime. Unfortunately my trip to the park was not during the fruit's season. But my relatives have tried it.
Oh, lots of enquiries from Singaporean about cheap trip to KK, Sabah. Silkair flies direct to KK daily. Other than that, Airasia (and MAS too) also flies to KK from JB. So you need not go all the way to KLIA.
Above all, great job on this. I do not remember Sabah/Labuan looks as beautiful. Oh, one correction. The hotel you stayed in KK is not Sheraton but Hyatt. It is next to a popular shopping centre (Wisma Merdeka) right?

Hi,
I read through your travelogue. very interesting and beautiful pictures. I am planing a trip to Sabah in April. I would value your input on the following:
1) Should I pre-book all tours, esp. the Mt Kinabalu climb. Is it possible to go to Kota Kinabalu and book the Mt. K summit trail on the spot?
2) Considering I just have a week tp spend in Sabah, what are the must-sees?
3) How much should I budget for the entire Sabah trip? An estimate in any currency would do.
Thanks,

Also, is it true all lodging at LR fully booked six months ahead ?
Can this be a ploy by operators to convince you to book with them early ?

As a professional photographer, who has also climbed Mt Kinabalu (TWICE!) I must say I think you have done a very credible job! I like the irreverant comments, too. Generally, very nice pix -- certainly good memories, for me too. I was the idiot who took the first computer, ever, to the top of Mt Kinabalu, in July 1985 -- and then took the first PC "Portable" (weighing all of 6.5Kgs) to the summit, four years later in 1989. I am just about to donate the first, an Epson PX-8, to the Sabah Museum. It was when looking to see if any of my stories about that time had ever made it onto the Internet, that I came across your website. Great stuff -- keep up the good work!
Martyn Green, 15/12/05
P.S. Only one thing -- having to type into this box, especially the boxes for name, etc. is almost impossible for anyone over 40, as the letters are so TINY! Also, it is RATHER time-consuming to have to click on every tiny photo, in order to see it clearly. I think something slightly more user-friendly would be a real advantage: But it is just the format, since the work is good!

Great photos you have there. Mine doesn't even come close to yours but you can check it out via the website above.
I did Mount Kinabalu via the Timpohon Trail in 2003 ~ same trail as yours. Planning to do Mount Kinabalu again next year via the Mersilau Trail. Heard that it is a longer trail but less steep.
Besides Padas and Manukan, you guys might want to check out Uncle Lim's cabin in Lower Kinabatangan (via Sandakan) and also the diving in Sipadan. It's amazing!
I love Sabah.
