The Trip » Whitewater Rafting at Padas River

Whitewater Rafting at Padas River was easily the most fun-filled 3-hours we'd ever had throughout the trip. Floating into the rapids, getting thrown into the water, doing the "rodeo" and splashing water at other rafts made for an exhilirating ride.

Heck - even the train journey towards the river made an experience by itself.

1.) For whitewater rafting at Padas River, we had to board an old English train at Beaufort.

2.) What a nice surprise, as the train ride turned out to be a pleasant experience in itself!

3.) We couldn't help but notice the simplicity of life for the locals here. Every now and then old women would board the train lugging heavy bags of food and goods for sale.

4.) Old, dilapidated wooden houses like these are a common sight along the journey.

5.) Occasionally, the train stops at designated stations to pick up and drop off passengers. Stesen Saliwangan is one of the better ones... some other stations pass off with just a single pole and a makeshift signboard.

6.) The tracks eventually stop at a bridge, where we had to disembark.

The journey was like a perfect representation of the lifestyle of the locals. It's hard, it's simple, but it works, and it's been the same for years.

7.) We had to cross a bridge to get to another small station, where another train would pick us up.
